Three months ago, I shared an article from Eater which broke the news of Kyle Glanville and Charles Babinski’s plans for the future—a shop of their own in LA that prepares delicious coffee and uses minimal disposables. Kyle, the 2008 US Barista Champion, and Charles, this year’s 2nd place USBC finalist, both left Intelligentsia Coffee this summer and have finally opened doors to their own coffee bar this week.
This new space is somewhat temporary while they look for a permanent home, but it gives them a way to try out ideas with customers while further shaping their concept for the perfect shop. G&B have partnered with Jessica Koslow who runs SQIRL, a confiture kitchen that specializes in deliciously named organic jams made from local produce. The unique partnership is sure to offer some of the best coffee, tea and toast in LA.
The starting line-up of roasters would excite any coffee lover, offering a variety from 49th Parallel, Heart, Intelligentsia and Ritual. For those wanting something cold in the SoCal sun, G&B have also bottled cold brewed coffee and teas to complete their menu.
Over the last few months I’ve had the pleasure of working with Kyle and Charles to develop their brand and it’s exciting to finally see parts of it alive in the world. I look forward to its evolution as all the details are refined and it expands in the future.

After two back-to-back events last July, in Edinburgh & London, Coffee Common is returning to the US. This time, setting up shop for 4 days in New York City. The team has partnered with Rachel Shechtman, founder of A Startup Store, to offer a pop-up coffee experience in a city whose access to quality coffee continues to grow.
Coffee Common has partnered with Google+ to broadcast “hang-outs” throughout the event and Breville will be giving away some of their latest home brewing equipment. There will be stations for comparative tasting, brewing demos and baristas to help troubleshoot home brewing problems and answer questions about coffee. On the weekend, there will be events scheduled in partnership with GiltCity and SkillShare.
Just like past events, this is more than a temporary coffee bar. Since coffee sales aren’t the goal, baristas and customers can engage without worrying about a line of people building up behind them. The atmosphere is designed to learn, share and discuss—all while enjoying some exceptional coffee (from Counter Culture, Gimme!, Intelligentsia, Heart and Ritual) prepared by a team of world class baristas. This event will be espresso free and focus solely on filtered black coffee. If you’re in New York, mark your calendar!

If you’re in London tonight and love coffee, there’s really no other place you should be then at Protein, for the triple threat launch of DunneFrankowski the company, DunneFrankowski’s Independent Coffee Book (London edition), and Protein by DunneFrankowski—the coffee bar (18 Hewett Street).
There’s going to be beer, food, and DJ’s tonight and the coffee shop will be open to the public during the day from 8am to 4pm. I’ve already looked into RyanAir flights, but I sadly won’t be making a last minute trip to the UK.
DunneFrankowski is a partnership between Victor Frankowski and Rob Dunne (a participant at Coffee Common in Edinburgh) who aim to intersect various genres of culture through the medium of the café. Go meet the fellows, check out the new café and get a preview of London’s latest coffee book.
I’ve always loved the reuse of shipping containers. A couple years ago, Illy partnered with the architect Adam Kalkin to transform his Quik House into a mobile pop-up cafe, where guests could enjoy a complimentary espresso. We need more of these floating around the coffee deprived towns of the world.
