Morning Mustache

08.05

I personally find mustaches annoying (mainly the ironic sort) and the trend of putting mustaches on everything is looong overplayed. But these mugs, designed by Peter Bruegger, were executed really well, so I wanted to share them with anyone who may actually enjoy groomed upper lip hair. There are 3 different mugs, two mustache designs on each (front/back). Enjoy!

Recycled Ceramic Mugs

06.25

Starbucks is apparently working on a set of mugs made from recycled clay (20% of them atleast). I really like their shape and the typography made from flecks of broken ceramic. It’s not clear whether those broken bits are what makes up the recycled aspects of the mug, but I like the direction they’re headed. I’d love to see more of these in the future with a higher percentage of recycled content.

This recycled ceramic mug was brought to life in a zero-waste factory in Japan, which reuses the clay of former mugs and dishes to create new ones. It’s a story of reuse and renewal that is told from mug to package. The particles coming together to form words and shapes represent a renewed respect for resources. For from broken bits of ceramic, we can make beautiful things.

Canon love meet coffee love

06.04

I’ve seen a number of concepts for camera lens coffee mugs floating around the internet, but this spring Canon took the idea and made it a reality.

The Canon Limited Edition 70-200mm L-Series Coffee Cup was introduced at the XXI Winter Olympics in Vancouver this past March. When the mugs were handed out to photographers covering the event they became instant “must-have” items in the photography world. The few retailers offering them have already sold out of pre-orders and the mug’s popularity has spawned its own Facebook fan page. Rumor has it that Nikon isn’t far behind.

DCILY partners with Starbucks!

05.28

Sike.

However, Starbucks has recently launched a fun new campaign to promote VIA, their instant coffee. The new website allows you to virtually and physically (through the use of a coupon) share a customized mug of VIA with a friend. While I’m no fan of instant coffee, I did review VIA last December and sadly, it’s better than Starbucks drip coffee. But all of my coffee snobbery aside, I do appreciate the design and—to a certain extent—the marketing behind the company. Starbucks has a solid in-house design group in Seattle and they consistently turn out high quality packaging, collateral, and emotion driven campaigns.

This new campaign does just that, while utilizing social media, customization, and mugs—which I love—and something many coffee drinkers have an intimate connection with. Now, if only Starbucks would start using them again in all of their stores, we could begin to stop wasting billions of paper cups each year (atleast they’re trying!).

Knuckle duster

05.12

You can now drink your coffee without losing street cred, thanks to Thabto (two heads are better than one), a design duo from London. Thabto specialize in designing fun and unique gifts, accessories and homewears. This mug was the groups first product and their latest, a keychain that stabilizes “wonkey” cafe tables, solves an age old problem without wasting sugar packets.

Virginia is for Coffee Lovers

04.25

Over the last two weeks, we had our first contest here at DCILY. The winner was Will Godwin, who’s Virginia mug garnered the most “likes” on our Facebook page, winning himself a Mug Hug! This really is a beautiful mug. Congrats Will and thanks to everyone who shared their lovely mugs with all of us.

Thermos

02.19

Designed by Jörg Boner, in Zurich, this beautiful thermos will easily transport a pot of coffee for you and a friend to the nearest park to share a lovely afternoon of conversation and caffeine.

Thermos is a coffee pot for people on the move. It carries two cups and is no bigger than fits comfortably into a bag. The elastic band that fixes the cups into place can be transformed into a handle in just one move, turning the termos bottle into a coffee pot. The way in which it plays with both archetypes is characteristic of the product.

The Coffee Brake

02.11

I really love coffee, but I equally love bikes and good design. So when I saw this mug I fell hard. It stung even more when I found out they aren’t available (yet!), but when they are, I’ll be sure to let everyone know. The Scallywags started out building frankenbikes in a garage up North, but now deliver coffee by bike to homes and businesses around Huntsville, AL. Here’s the scoop on their future offering.

Created by a world traveler who dared to ask the question: “What good is a sturdy metal mug with a flimsy plastic handle?” Whether you’re a hardcore coffee drinker or a dabbler, this 14 oz. double-walled insulated stainless steel mug is what you’re after. Bicycle brake handle fixed in one of two positions. Non-skid bottom and snug-fitting plastic lid.

They’ve got an inspiring story, check it out at www.the-scallywags.com

Mug Shot — Black President

01.05

While this isn’t an official Mug Shot, since I don’t own one(yet) and no one submitted this, it is one of the greatest mugs I’ve seen. Just brilliant.

A bit pricey, but the guys cleverness is worth something. For sale at Etsy.

Mug Shot — Mat Weeks

12.08

mugshot_002_mat

As a potter, I have an ever rotating gaggle of mugs to choose from, but this one is one of my recent favorites. Joyce Fujiwara has been one of my ceramics teachers on and off for a year now and she finally had an open studio where I could buy one of her beautiful pieces. This is now my go-to mug at home and helps make weekend mornings start a little easier. –Mat
